ABSU withdraws Kalu's certificate: Government bans other schools from doing the same
04 Mar 2013
Abuja – Days after Abia State University withdrew the certificate formally awarded to former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, the Nigerian Federal government has sent a circular to all Universities in the country warning them to abstain from doing the same.
The reason the academic board of the university withdrew former Governor Kalu’s degree certificate may not be unconnected with the governor’s failure to award contracts to his lecturers, but this is mere speculation.
The school on its part claims that the Governor was never a student in the first place, an assertion that indicates jealousy on the part of the university.
Following an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet at Aso Rock, it was decided that the university had acted presumptuously and hastily, and had failed to take into recognition the status of the former student.
Ultimately, ministers agreed that due process had not been followed, and that this runs contrary to the reformed image being built for Nigeria.
Consequently, a unanimous decision was taken to instruct all other universities not to follow ABSU’s example.
A circular communicating the cabinet’s directive was immediately sent to the zoology department of the University of Port Harcourt. Copies have since been sent to other Universities.
