Lagos – Groundbreaking research into the online behaviour of Nigerians has revealed that people on microblogging site, twitter, tend to follow people who are better looking than they are.

This rule only falters when the subject is male and they come across a twitter account with a boob avatar. In this case they follow the account without even seeing the face of the owner of the boobs.

The research carried out by students of a leading Nigerian university also discovered that Nigerians on Facebook seem to think that GOD has a Facebook account or at least checks the social networking site for prayers to answer or to see who has remembered to thank him for an answered prayer.

The research further classified online Nigerians into two distinct groups characterised by the websites they frequent. Thus, there are online Nigerians who regularly visit and post comments to sites such as Nairalnad.com, while the other distinct group of online Nigerians demonstrated a preference for sites such as Bellanaija.com.

The researchers pointed out marked differences in the nature of the two identified classes of online Nigerians. While one group is comprised mostly of Nigerians who actively seek out new ways to insult other people online, the other group are mainly people who spend less than 1% of their workdays on Facebook and who actually have a life.

The research also made a worrisome discovery about many online Nigerians, namely that a lot of them do not recognize satire when they read it.

This, the researchers called the wazobiareport.com effect and they defined it as the tendency of members of one of the identified classes of online Nigerians to believe anything they read online and repost same without taking time to read disclaimers, do the barest minimum Google research, or apply any form of logical reasoning, just because they found the material on a website.
